Some of our own childhood memories involve nursery rhymes across family generations. The timeless nature of these little tunes embed themselves in our minds. And there's a reason why! The repetitive nature of the verses helps children grasp the basics of language rhythm, intonation, and pitch – all essential elements for effective communication.
Boosting Phonological Awareness 🔤
Let's talk about phonological awareness, which is the ability to recognize and play around with sounds. Nursery rhymes are a goldmine for this! The playful rhyming words and alliteration in these verses expose children to a variety of sounds, and helps them to listen to the subtle differences between them. As they happily repeat the rhymes, they're unknowingly refining their ability to hear and manipulate these subtle differences and to break down and build up words. Some even include environmental sounds that help children to practice the symbolic sounds we use like in 'Old Macdonald' or 'The Wheels on the Bus'. What a way to lay the foundations for future literacy.
